At a broader level, we need to skim through history, not merely political and religious history in certain pockets of nations, invasions, wars, occupation, colonialism etc.
Instead of we must look at the history of civilization as a whole on the planet.
Then, study what are the things or issues or aspects that has influenced, inspired, impacted and were (and perhaps in some cases ) / are trends and are of greater importance and use to human life as a whole on the planet.
If we do that first, we would know that it was hunting and killing , then looking out for fire from there on gradually evolution of civilization has meandered through various things which shaped, supported and sustained human development as sophisticated , matured, sensible, intelligent beings who could co- habit with certain well defined and mutually agreed and accepted trade offs for a peaceful, comfortable, happy, healthy and prosperous living moving with the fast developments in the world.
In that aspect religion played a huge role in bringing lots of benefits to humanity in its infancy like baby food and toys.
But as society progressed political management, economic welfare, scientific developments and technological progress have taken a predominant role , rightly so, because of their tangible vital contribution and importance.
In that scheme of things many aspects of religion have reached their expiry date except for status quo addicts in the form of luddites, lotus-eaters and lazy old folks who prefer lingering around in the life support systems of hoary past.
Therefore, it is but natural that youth may not be interested because they feel no necessity to fit into any predefined slots of the past
