Have your own set of resolutions to make and break.

Have your own set of resolutions to make and break.

Attitudes are formed because of this ongoing process of evaluations.

We all constantly evaluate everything, everyone and various aspects of our environment. So, to ensure correct attitude we must analyse what are the tools with which/basis on which we evaluate?

The methods we adopt to evaluate.

And how we evaluate?

All these, in turn, will largely determine our attitude in most cases.

This will also give us an idea whether our attitude influences our behaviour or our behaviour influences our attitude.

Evaluate the purpose of life by the amount of happiness you have given to others.

Evaluate the value of life by the extent you have been useful to others.

Evaluate the meaning of life by the love you give to others.

Evaluate the destiny of life by the amount of love you get from others.

Evaluate the quality of your life by your attitudes.

Evaluate the wisdom of your life by the experience you have gained and the lessons you have learnt and the knowledge you have acquired from your experiments and actions.

Evaluate the worthiness of your life by the amount of or extent of realizations you have had.

Evaluate the totality of life not by owning anything or even trying to own life itself but by living life.

But the best way to evaluate life is to live it.

And you live based on what you have and who you are.

Even if you are schooled in irrelevant, inadequate, outdated, useless, erroneous trivia at least do not base your belief systems or thoughts on them because

Your thoughts and beliefs decide your life irrespective of whether you are prosperous, peaceful and happy or the other way.

Because they help you to make the choice. The choices you make decide who you are. What you do depends on who you are and ultimately what you do gets you whatever you have.

But unfortunately, we tend to think the process topsy-turvy.

We want to have whatever we want and think that it will make us and shape us.

Be on your own. Don’t choose for others nor let others choose for you.

So, have your own set of resolutions to make and break.

Abstractness of Reality, Thoughts and Feelings

The words Reality, Thoughts and Feelings are terms generally used very loosely to convey things that are abstract and relative.

The abstractness and element of relativity about reality, thoughts and feelings defy specific definitions for anyone of them.

Any single definition of what is reality, what is thought and what is feeling will be defying logic and difficult because all these three terms refer to phenomena that are a bit complicated as they are all in certain ways independent, in certain ways interdependent and in many ways inner dependent.

We make them more abstract by adding constantly a huge carapace of fuzziness around them.

Certain philosophical concepts and idealistic ideas are meant to be imparted to only those who have at least the necessary intelligence to understand the appropriate meaning, even if they cannot understand the exact one in proper perspective.

They are called abstract for a reason.

I think the fact that they are abstract is the most important thing we must keep in mind and mind about.

Though there is nothing wrong in constantly trying to seek to know what they are or what is meant by the terms through which certain abstract phenomena are articulated verbally, here I mean things like Reality, Sprit, thoughts etc

They are not meant for those incapable of handling them.
I do not want to say uninitiated or less intelligent because then I would be courting controversy.

It is like giving a knife to a child.
Whatever the child does with it you cannot blame the child.

This has been the problem even with some of the highly scholarly and academically well equipped people as they lack the necessary perspective to evaluate things and ideas and get educated with appropriate contextual relevance.

This has been the problem with many myths, epics, history and scriptures.

We mutilate them in multiple ways like for example over exaggeration; excessive adoration or condemnation; extreme unwarranted devotion or irrelevant criticism; excitement in ideologically appropriating greatness; trying hard to  convince that something has  universal application and can act as a panacea; ethnocentric pride in claiming that we knew something much earlier than the rest; portraying many things with our limited petrified prejudices, putrefied perceptions and puerile pomposity and so on.

All these collating to suit our justification or our stand on something may lead to collusions and ultimately mask everything with massive misinterpretations.

Worst part is  all these is they prevent many us from making an unbiased or unconditioned observation of anything as it is or grasping any phenomenon as it is or seeing and accepting anything actually as it is.

This is how we render them more abstract.

Under such category of things come these: - Reality, Thinking and Feeling.

Thinking or thoughts and feeling or feelings [emotions] are important components of social human beings.

It would be really dangerous to encounter a society where human beings act without feelings and/or thoughtlessly.

The very same thinking or thought and feeling or feelings [emotions] may hamper our progress into or in higher realms of life and living.

But no human being can achieve a higher state of consciousness without going through the processes of thinking and feeling.
It is like expecting someone to write great novel without learning alphabets or words.
These are necessary steps i.e. thoughts and feelings but they need not necessarily be the stops.

Not only reality but all thoughts and feelings are also relative.
No one say with axiomatic certitude that something as the only or ultimate reality or best reality because reality itself is what is perceived to be so.

So, it is even risky to venture into come out with any particular definition and therefore most people mostly catch on to some readymade definitions available out there.

Fundamentally Reality is reality with all its multiple facets and faces; dimensions and dynamics; polarities and probabilities; positives and negatives; victors and victims and so on.

But reporting of reality is confined to or constricted by perspectives, frames of reference of limited perceptions, populist projections, perverted and preconceived portrayals based on identity affiliation of religion, region, language, ideologies etc.

Seeking and searching for meaning of life with all our senses, sanity, with a scientific spirit and trying to understand spirituality- to find if it exists- along with a sense of humane social consciousness renders seeking a sweet sojourn.

Articulation

Articulation is both an art and science but must not be mistaken as a mere mastery of words or linguistics skills.

Its greatness is its ability to deliver effective communication for various occasions and on several topics.

It is because articulation I believe is the flow of thoughts and ideas that use the wings of expressions to weave appropriate and appealing patterns.

That's why all great leaders, especially political and religious ones are very articulate and they do not exercise any restraint unless for diplomatic wheedling.

Articulation with appropriate definition and adequate elaboration brings out multiple nuances and niceties like canine senses of smell and which are all cleverly and pleasantly ensconced in the colorful expressions with a beauty like the multiple shades of pavonine splendor.

Thoughts and Thinking

They think, therefore they are-Why the life of the mind is so important in France

This titled hooked me on to think about a dozen things on ‘thoughts and thinking’.

Everyone thinks but what one thinks and when one thinks matters more.

        1.    I would like to get the book and read at the earliest.

2.    What is of paramount importance and influence is their [French] clarity of perception and conviction with which they approach most issues with undiluted intellectual analysis which, of course, in some cases may not work out fine.

           3.    Mostly people use the word ‘think’ or ‘thinking’ very vaguely.

4.    There are two great books about thinking or thoughts that I enjoyed reading which cover the entire depth and width of all that goes to influence/impact /create the thought/thinking process. Both these books study thought and thinking from various perspectives and in the process they also cover a huge bandwidth of subjects and aspects of life, evolution, psychology etc.

5.    ‘Thinking’ itself where, when and why it germinates? What it gives out and why it does so? What are its powers? All these have been very scientifically and scholarly described by many but still it is the unpredictability of thinking process that puzzles most   and therefore there is still a lot to unravel about thought and thinking as a whole. In whatever small literature I have come across and what little I know I think that thinking   capacity is not only an advanced faculty in terms of evolutionary biology but it is also a faculty that has eluded comprehensive and clear cut descriptions with axiomatic certitude as such and such.

6.    Whereas normally I have come across works of  literature and philosophy associate thinking /thoughts mostly with ideas, concepts etc which are not thoughts per se, but intellectualized presentation of thoughts.

7.    This is one of the reasons why thinking is also classified as critical thinking, creative thinking, ideal thinking, political thinking, correct thinking etc and depending upon the usefulness or relevance of thoughts there are also studies on thinking out of the box, inside the box etc.

8.    The awful thing with a thought which is lingering in your mind but you don’t get  a word or expression to communicate that correctly and the feeling is like having the last  piece of chips in hand and while taking to your mouth someone plucks it away  from you. Still worse is a thought which you are very much convinced is very vital and has long term impact but no one pays attention.

                 9.    Coming back to the books
Thinking And Destiny by Harold W. Percival

“In Thinking and Destiny, something new, although older than time, is now made known to the world--about Consciousness. The information is largely about the makeup of the human, where man comes from, what becomes of him; it explains what thinking is; it tells how a thought is created, and how thoughts are exteriorized into acts, objects and events, and how they make his destiny. Destiny is thus shown to be self-determined by thinking;   and the process of re-existence and the after-death states are told in detail. A single reading  of any one chapter of Thinking and Destiny brings rich rewards in new understanding of  life`s puzzling mysteries. To read the entire book is to come nearer to knowledge of   one`s destiny and how to shape it than is possible through study of anything previously                written in the English language. Both the casually curious glancer at books and the most avid seeker for knowledge will be intrigued by the index, which lists more than 400  subjects in Thinking and Destiny, and by the fifteen chapter headings in the Table of   Contents, which identify the 156 sections. The Foreword contains the only pages in which  Mr. Percival uses the first personal pronoun. Here he relates some of the amazing experiences through which he was able to grasp the knowledge he transmits, and to  acquire the ability to do so.” From source

Another  is  ‘The stuff of thought’ by  Steven Pinker and his other book “How the  Mind Works’

12.Of course no one has explored and explained the whole gamut of  thought and thinking as vividly as J.Krishnamurthy.

Here are some of his select quotes on thoughts and thinking
A] “Thought is so cunning, so clever, that it distorts everything for its own convenience.”

― Jiddu Krishnamurti, Freedom from the Known

b] Why has humanity given such extraordinary importance to thought? Is it because it is the only thing we have, even though it is activated through senses? Is it because thought has been able to dominate nature, dominate its surroundings, has brought about some physical security? Is it because it is the greatest instrument through which man operates, lives and benefits? Is it because thought has made the gods, the saviours, the super- consciousness, forgetting the anxiety, the fear, the sorrow, the envy, the guilt? Is it because it holds people together as a nation, as a group, as a sect? Is it because it offers hope to a dark life? Is it because it gives an opening to escape from the daily boring ways of our life? Is it because not knowing what the future is, it offers the security of the past, its arrogance, its insistence on experience? Is it because in knowledge there is stability, the avoidance of fear in the certainty of the known? Is it because thought in itself has assumed an invulnerable position, taken a stand against the unknown? Is it because love is unaccountable, not measurable, while thought is measured and resists the changeless movement of love?
We have never questioned the very nature of thought. We have accepted thought as inevitable, as our eyes and legs. We have never probed to the very depth of thought: and because we have never questioned it, it has assumed preeminence. It is the tyrant of our life and tyrants are rarely challenged.
-- Krishnamurti, Letters To The Schools, Volume 1, 15th March, 1979

c] I suggested that to slow down the mind in order to examine the thought-feeling process, you should write down every thought-feeling. If one wishes to understand, for example, a machine of high revolution one has to slow it down, not stop it for then it becomes merely a dead matter; but make it turn gently, slowly, to study its structure, its movement. Likewise if we wish to understand our mind, we must slow down our thinking - not put a stop to it - slow it down in order to study it, to follow it to its fullest extent. And to do this I suggested that you write down every thought-feeling.

8th Public Talk, Oak Grove Talks. CD-rom code OJ44T8

d] J. Krishnamurti 29th July 1981: So thought, time, space, psychologically is the source of conflict and sorrow. After examining it, is it possible for thought - please listen to this - for thought to realize its own place, which is in the world of technique and it has no place psychologically?

e] J. Krishnamurti 28th Nov 1981: Only when thought naturally, without conflict, without struggle comes to an end, which is time, then there is a possibility of that which is eternal. So you say, `Tell me how to end thought; tell me the system, the practice, I'll do it for the rest of my life.' So you are back again to the same old thing.

2] When we talk of thought or thinking we cannot afford not to think about the great J. krsihnamurthi and his thoughts on thoughts. So here I  quote  a minuscule sample from some of his talks. I made a nostalgic visit to the place where he used to deliver his lecture after again buying some new versions/editions of his works.
These quotes are followed by  reviews and link to the book of another author who wrote extensively  more psychologically as a subject the birth, process and progress of thought and I have enjoyed reading his works also long back, Harold W. Percival’s book Thinking And Destiny
