World Tourism Day in India 2023

On World Tourism Day in India 2023, we Indians must be proud , rightly so, of our heritage sites, architectural and cultural splendours, geographical natural wonders and our tourism departments blunders.

We have not tapped even 10% of our potential. While we wax eloquent on bran drain, we hardly ever bother to notice, much less quantify, the tourism revenue drain in India.

Modern day tourism requires proper infrastructure with a complete ecosystem involving a whole gamut of tourists’ attraction and promotion factors. Comfort in new environs to enjoy both the journey, visit and stay that can trigger nostalgic feelings at a later day and there must be somethings to revisit those nostalgic moments, at least some basic memorabilia like T-shirts, photo cards, fridge magnets, key chains, booklets etc. None of these things are there in most places.

Even our much-venerated pilgrimage centres the journey are not adventurous or anything to do with ascetic arduous peregrinations but pure danger and potential risk, they escalate when a VIP visits. There is neither discipline nor crowd management anywhere. Cleanliness is totally neglected in most places.

If people, try to escape all these dangers and try to go abroad our system kills the very instinct for travel and tourism through a 17th century stupid NOC rules in almost all organisations.

When you visit a place, you grasp life in its complete form as it is in that place. While doing so, you feel a new joy, experience life differently and learn to appreciate the whole  environment  i.e., all aspects of that place its language, culture, food, dress, traditions etc with total intensity and intense totality. Of course, certain preferences, embedded as prejudices, may not allow one to accept every type of food, appreciate every culture of the place or accept all types of dress codes, understand every language, yet one is struck by something new, something different and most importantly, in most places people are nice to tourists.

"What you've done becomes the judge of what you're going to do — especially in other people's minds.  When you're traveling, you are what you are right there and then.  People don't have your past to hold against you.  No yesterdays on the road."-William L H Moon

Symbolically too, when our mind travels without carrying the burden of the past  it is a very enjoyable journey .

Travelogues takes us not only to new places but introduce us to hitherto unknown and unseen newer perspectives to perceive life.

Many great works are chronicles of observed activities or absurdities , the psychological impacts it had on the thinker or writer, their own  perceived and  concerned socio- cultural implications of those activities.

In some cases, they also used ideological extrapolation  to interpret events.

The author. who unfortunately, missed Nobel prize James Joyce's 1000 plus pages book Ulysses is chronicle of a day.  Some weave a wonderful study of psychology.

Even when some great authors, thinkers and seekers write travelogues they convey a lot of great in-depth insight , architectural  study and philosophical insights. In Paul Brunton's work his spiritual seeking, Socio-psychological aspects in Aldous Huxley's works and socio- cultural aspects and romance in Lawrence Durrell's works etc.

Sweet Making Process

There are certain things so unique in terms of their texture, taste, availability that if they are affordable I would go all the way to buy and popularize.

Of course, most of these unique things carry with them vast history, unbelievable creative traditions and retain their pristine purity only in their limited editions as they cannot be made available in large scale either due to lack of raw material source or they are so labour intensive that they become not that easily available.

I am sharing a good item and a fabric. It is these  food items that need to get special branding.

First food, I never miss it whenever I go to  Telungana but now unfortunately, some compromised versions are sold.

Sacrificing youth for old age

“Most of us live like monks…rooting ourselves to a home or a career and using the future as a kind of phony ritual that justifies the present. In this way, we end spending (as Thoreau put it) “the best part of one’s life earning money in order to enjoy a questionable liberty during the least valuable part of it.”

Successful Businesses Houses in India be it Reliance or Tata are into multiple businesses with actual geographical spread pan India.

1.    Why?

Various reasons.

Ø They would like to adjust or balance their overall financial portfolio irrespective of assaults from landscape of competition and market volatilities and other factors.

Ø They also know that consumer base both for services and products of various categories targeted towards various strata of population are.

2.    How they do it and how come they are successful?

They also ensure that in every vertical there is an in-built win-win model for multiple stakeholders.

3.    Who we are?

[With link …] just 5 bullet points about our experience, bandwidth in sourcing/servicing.

    4. What we want to do, where and how?

Ø Connecting consumers from Kashmir to Kanyakumari through brand presence.

   6. When we want to do?

As early as we get an opportunity to have our project proposals with details. As these project in its entire gamut of operations will generate massive employment, exponential growth of consumers for Made in India products/items and create overall empowerment and economic growth spanning all over India.

Peace, realistically, is feasible

Peace, realistically, is feasible only when national, international business operators' self interest are taken care of which then will have the moral obligation and economic necessity for all stakeholders' benefits which will prevail over narrow political jingoism and catastrophic wars.

MAP of life reveals a new Atlas where AGE

In brief the MAP of life reveals a new Atlas where AGE allows us to decipher the nuances of nature of life and to live naturally.

We learn to notice, at the cost of years indifference or ignorance or comfort zones which gave the luxury to our thoughts, ideas, observations, perspectives to be ensconced in various types of and at different levels of confirmation biases which were convenient to live through the multiple modes of socially acceptable norms and mores.

Experience, though, late but slowly emboldens us to shed the borders of unwanted hypocrisies but retain the necessities of inevitable multiple adjustments ( what I meant by deciphering the nuances of nature.).

MAP is enhanced and slightly enlightened.

Mindset

Attitude and

Perspectives.

AGE is better polished.

Attitude,

Gratitude and

Exactitude.

Life understands and accepts the necessity to live more in a mode that is adjustment based and action oriented rather than reaction driven.

Tossing and swinging human beings between phobias and philias based on their inherent ideology of homogenisation

Tossing and swinging human beings between phobias and philias based on their inherent ideology of homogenisation.

The latest one being to study the gender of farts and its contribution to carbon footprints..

The latest one being Wokeism and its obsession with global warming.

The West resorts to tossing and swinging human beings between phobias and philias based on their inherent ideology of homogenisation.

The craze for homogenization and the claim of panacea are the ills that have marred evolution of human excellence to a very great extent.

These two are the result of presumptive psychological fixations.

The former is pushed ahead with various justifications while the latter is pushed forth out of some presumptions, mostly ethnocentric pride due to indoctrinated identity based on some ideology predominantly either religious or political.

Nature is variety and variety is natural. Denying and defying reality cannot always work.

Throughout history it has failed miserably.

Be it the Roman Empire’s greed to spread its tentacles [ be a Roman in Rome] ; be it the attempt to homogenize religion which failed with Spanish Inquisition; be it Nazism or Colonialism; all have failed.

Once these attempts at homogenizing cultures, beliefs, political ideologies have failed, the West resorted to  Trade and Economics and tried to classify everything under either Capitalism or Communism, politically the Right and the Left .

Those scripting any political narrative realize to do away with the outdated dichotomy of Left and Right because life, especially socio-cultural and economic life, has many dimensions each having its own dynamics and in addition there are also those emanating from intersectionality and interactions and collectively these show up themselves with varying degrees of intensity.

Fortunately, life and all its concomitant evolutions happen despite and beyond the blinkered narratives peddled by status quo addicts of trite dichotomies and have made visible various options between, besides, beneath and above those dichotomies, and these may strengthen the wings and enable the discourse to soar into unbiased zones and offer some solutions to many present-day problems faced by humanity.

It is unhealthy if we do not realize  that the human race is far more than the opportunities it is consciously aware of as Jean Paul Sartre provides the example of the young man who puts his hand on his first date's hand. She, who does not really know him yet, must either leave her hand there or remove it. Either choice reveals something not part of her consciousness. We are far more than the limited opportunities present in the world.

Internalise ,revisit , rethink, reevaluate, relate anew with greater clarity and better perspectives.

Sharing a lot of thought provoking, inward realisation stimulating, idea inspiring, philosophical enquiry-based study materials are always useful.

They are inspiring and impelling one to revisit , rethink, reevaluate, relate anew with greater clarity and better perspectives.

In brief, they trigger one’s impulse to respond as well.

Unfortunately, the imperatives of life's demanding routines may not offer the luxury of time to indite the gushing thoughts and ideas.

However, as we read interesting materials, we must try to internalise the essence of ideas  and some useful expressions to imitate later.

So, whenever all other distractions go on a sojourn, then, in silence of the mind and solitude in time and space we may recollect and engage in expressing the understanding of and learning from, rather the whole take away from those enlightened materials.

Core Values beyond religious identity

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_tpHG9hKBI

https://youtu.be/B_tpHG9hKBI?si=zU0AwaVCsBI2S5hZ

It is unfortunate that the world is rewinding towards more discussions on religions and faith, especially many of their naïve aspects, which have outlived their relevance for various factors of present generations’ needs.

However, when such topics are thrown at press conferences to political leaders/aspirants, it requires real courage of conviction to talk about the core values of religions/faiths which do help to hold the social fabric with certain time tested and universally acceptable sane propositions and to take the perspective of discussions beyond ideological dichotomies/ binaries and identity based classifications.

On most topics he is frank , has enough clarity and talks sense.

Most importantly is not averse to taking head on certain outdated or vestigial institutions, kicking away white elephants in the system and willing to at least talk  boldly on unpopular, controversial issues with a clear stand.

He may be right or wrong. May become a useful, purposeful great leader or dumped on the roadside by the voting public.

But it does matter a lot that we need such people who are willing to make bold statements on certain issues with courage of conviction unmindful of the outcomes of success at the elections.

I consider him as one of the most powerful young leaders, better and bolder than our PM.

Obvious, of course, the dynamics of factual economic power and a society imbued with luddites and status quo addicts, combined with total lack of ecosystem in many domains [ though we may cherish in singing the refrain that we are a civilization that did this or that or knew so many things - if that is the case why everyone suffers from xenophilia].

Unfortunately, even for any sincere leader with vision and absolute majority, the preferred journey of option would be diplomatically deal, compromise, get along, reconcile etc and wait for a probable and opportune time when the path can be safely changed, and destination could become a promised land of more opportunities, freedom, and greater economic prosperity.

Our PM too took some very bold decisions, not necessarily before parliament elections, but before major state assembly elections- which were all like referendums on his government- like Article 370, TT, Demo, GST etc , first doing away with that stupid PLANNING COMMISSION while everything is planned based on commission in real politics. He was unashamed to talk about toilets in his first speech.

Though unfortunately, he does not have the luxury of a 30 trillion USD economy not to bother about or to speak or to plunge into action on certain uncomfortable geopolitical issues or can he afford to even talk about the manipulations of the deep state.

Whereas Vivek is already boldly calling them (the deep state) and their scheming by name and is declaring about downsizing (the white elephants in US) administration.

Institutions preferred over one man shows

Great Individuals need to develop and promote visibly second line of leadership may be the need of the hour, especially when we do not have a better choice.

So, what a good leader stands for, what are all the work that we all  appreciate that has been done by him need to continue as all of them may be good schemes but which are a work in progress that need an institutional or well laid decentralised  organisational set up with the second line of performers ( ideologues not in hiding or constantly kept behind the screens ) must also be made visible and encouraged so that the public recognises the team.

Otherwise, these types of one-man shows, however great or good or mighty, may disappear or will have the least presence , like our Gurukula systems or Siddha medical systems.

We are living in an age of not one great enlightened Saint imparting wisdom through one chosen disciple ( which at any time will have only limited geographical spread and appeal to confined group) but in an age of Amazon logic where we need to deliver whatever the individual expects anywhere anytime and push whatever the Amazon owners want to deliver in subtle ways.

From nonsensical narratives to nice things , everything requires an institutionalised delivery system, aggregation of talent pool, ideas, aspirations and easy access to multiple sources or points.

Context and presumptions

Very good and useful observations.

Everything is contextual and hence must be contextualised or operated with contextual relevance or regional requirements.

Few days  back I wrote about the importance of context to someone .

Few years back I had someone at Madras club during breakfast he asked for sausages and salmon.

Without even listening to what he had asked for the waiter replies, yes, we have three sauce chilli, tomato and white and sambar we serve but for the main dish do you want bread sandwich, idli, vada, Pongal, dosa, idiyappam. I was having a hearty laugh.

The problem is we think, rather presume that everything around happens as per the templates we already know/have/want and end up forgetting the world of contexts throws new and novel challenges hitherto, unknown and unencountered by us.

In this context I cannot resist quoting these from Idries Shah the great Sufi scholar.

“Study the assumptions behind your actions. Then study the assumptions behind your assumptions.”
― Idries Shah

"You have not forgotten to remember;
You have remembered to forget.
But people can forget to forget. That is just as important as remembering to remember - and generally more practical.” ―
Idries Shah.

Ultimate reality or truth is as Eric  Micha’el Leventhal says, “You are here on earth to unearth who on earth you are".

Violence and the West

The West is unashamed of violence.

They proudly display a museum in Naples, Italy which has all torture equipment used for centuries.

If you visit that place, you won't feel like eating for two days.

Similarly, the place where slave trade started in the world by Portuguese  and the very  descents of the slaves eking out living by acting as tourist guides explaining everything. How they groomed able bodied men and tortured weak men and women, and the cruellest way used to kill them are really heart wrenching to see in a small remote Island off the coast of Dakkar Ile Gore.

I visited both the places and bought books about them as well. They have neither shame nor regret.

The other Abrahamic religion is the correct counter for these chaps.

Unfortunately, people don't read proper history, not that they are not around.

History for a United World by Dance records that there was only one civilization which exhibited civilized behaviour that is Hindus.

I also read a book called Our Divided World: Poverty, Hunger & Overpopulation. Our Only Earth Series. A Curriculum for Global Problem Solving- By Eric

Ronald Harvey in his book ‘Our Fragmented World’ writes, “The influence of environment begins long before birth. It begins at the beginning, with our genes. Genes do not exist in vacuo. They are part of their environment as we are to our world. They are as it were ‘sewn into’ their environment as we are to ours. No organism ever develops without an environment. It is not inheritance per se but the interaction between inheritance and environment where the responsibility must be placed”. “So, our world and ourselves are one, we and our world form part of an organic whole”

We just pass under the carpet who did what and when, use such stupid GK questions.

We never question why it was done?

Then what leads to certain horrible events?

Then how was it executed?

At last the short term and long term impact and so on.

We know animals attack when they are hungry or when they apprehend danger. But we hardly try to know why and how a single individual or ideology could sway an entire population and what measures were used.

The root cause of violence may not always be from a single individual; it must be the result of either prevailing culture or accepted practice.

Certain books like Satre's Saint Gene and Erick Fromm's Anatomy of Destruction ( about Hitler) explain the psychology of the individual and the why and how of  they got manifested on a large scale.

Creative, non-linear, asymmetric thinking generates creative, non-linear, asymmetric outcomes

Though the following story has been quoted several times and may contain some lessons, I my opinion, lot of leadership skills, business models/ideas,  corporate governance, administration etc are all ' context specific' both the approaches/activities and results/ outcomes are contextual / situational.

" In 2009, Stanford business professor Tina Seelig split her class into groups and issued a challenge:

Each group had $5 and 2 hours to make the highest return on the initial money.

At the end, they'd give a short presentation on their strategy.

The results were fascinating...

Most of the groups followed a basic approach:

• Use the $5 to buy a few items.
• Barter or resell those items.
• Repeat
• Sell final items for (hopefully) more than $5.

These groups made a modest return on their initial $5.

A few groups ignored the $5.

They thought up ways to make the most money in the 2 hours of allotted time:

• Made and sold reservations at hot restaurants.
• Refilled bike tires on campus for $1 each.

These groups made a better return on their initial $5.

The winning group took an entirely different approach.

They had three core realizations:

1. The $5 was nothing more than a distraction.

2. The 2 hours of time was not enough to make an attractive, outsized return with a mini-business (like selling restaurant reservations or filling bike tires).

3. The most valuable "asset" was actually the presentation time in front of a class of Stanford students.

Realizing the value of this hidden asset, they offered the presentation time to companies looking to recruit Stanford students.

They struck a deal to sell the time slot for $650, netting a monstrous return on the $5 of initial capital.

The losing groups thought in linear, logical terms and achieved a linear, logical outcome.

The winning group thought differently.

So, what can we learn from this story?

There are two types of problems:

1. Low-Stakes: Lower potential, linear rewards. Decisions are easily reversible.

2. High-Stakes: Higher potential, asymmetric rewards. Decisions are not easily reversible.

With low-stakes problems, given the reward potential is low and the decisions are easily reversible, we can use shortcuts and heuristics to choose our path. We can take a logical, linear approach.

With high-stakes problems, the high, asymmetric reward potential means we need to think differently. We want to take a creative, non-linear approach.

Three steps to start thinking differently:

Step 1: Avoid the Distraction

There will always be an "obvious" solution that is simple, clear, and entirely wrong.

In the challenge, the $5 was nothing more than a distraction. It was a trap.

To find the best path, you have to avoid the distraction.

Step 2: Ask Foundational Questions

Ask and answer questions that expose and vet underlying assumptions and logic.

• What's the real problem you are trying to solve?
• What's your hypothesis? Why?
• What are your core assumptions? Why?
• What evidence do you have?
• What are your core options?
• What alternatives exist?

This takes time, but it's an essential exercise when facing a problem with the potential for non-linear rewards.

Step 3: Select the High Leverage Approach

Slow down and evaluate the options on the table.

Select the path most likely to generate the asymmetric, attractive risk-adjusted returns.

If the story teaches us one thing, it's this:

Creative, non-linear, asymmetric thinking generates creative, non-linear, asymmetric outcomes.".

Politics is more about opportunism, sensationalism and publicity

Politics is more about opportunism, sensationalism and publicity.

At ground level really yes. Both the media and the government boasts only about big investments, claims of great strides made in certain sectors while the harsh reality is various factors get ignored in the process of economic projection. At least, fortunately, India is not in a huge debt trap like China and the US.

The constraints of democracy is a curse especially the ones where the majority of the media are vultures looking out for victimhood peddling; judiciary works on wrong priorities and procrastination;  the bureaucrats are the preferred and positioned feeder cells ( in realms irrespective of their expertise but their well knit connection with vested interest lobbies ) to the political decision makers.

This heady cocktail leads to  indifference to important issues as the hangover of varying degrees of ignorance lingers around.

If we get into several minute details , which unfortunately, everyone including the whole opposition is either, most likely, ignorant and even the media is unaware. I have certain observations which I can share with you while we chat. These are , equally , silent undeclared incomes for the government.  So, they are choosing to blissfully ignore the expenditures.

The stupid or crooked PC abolished a very important course in accounting in India ICWAI which studied in greater detail certain vital aspects of accounting which go missing even in CA and all types of Financial Audits.

This was called costing. In costing there were detailed studies of ' operational expenses' which is one of the most vital aspects of many business activities.

In the absence of the detailed accounting of that we have income, revenue and only capital expenses. This projection is good for both getting funding as well as political publicity but reality will be a big mismatch.

Language and concepts

 Language and concepts

Contexts create words, then words decide the concepts, gradually they can trigger a whole lot of things like culture, history, tradition, values etc.

As debates veer towards more nuanced and slightly receptive tenor from the other side I thought  if I could spice up the unending debates on how certain words carry a huge culture, history, values and how concepts make their way and so on.

All of these are exciting poetry of human evolution that we take for granted in our busy lives [ this taking for granted anything is a gross indifference to life-whereby we may be unaware of our own hidden potential talents] without relishing their nicety or nasty influence and impact overall.

Unless one is sure about what the connotation of the word to the majority, even if it were far removed from the actual denotation of the word [ in fact if we dive into etymology, often they are too far removed from the denotation as the carapace of connotations make it even unrecognizable] and then it migrated towards language and language learning etc. I was asked by my friend to share a few things on peculiarities of language, language learning which I had long back shared with him and a few on how to influence the thoughts etc.

Here are a few from the selection that may be interesting.

BHARATHA

In an article for a magazine I wrote this after death Of Dr.M.Balamuralikrishna .

In one of his kritis he explains the word ‘BHARATHA’ the very word used to name our great country  mean 'bha' for bhakthi[dedication or devotion with sincerity ]- ra –for rakthi –emotional content that is bhava of the soul [doing with passion] and tha for thanmaythvam- aesthetc quality [ not a mere entertainment for pleasure but a mode of artistic experience  for peace and joy] . Bhakthi Rakthi Thanmaythvan ithi bharatham.
Na Jaane (Hamir Kalyani)
While many prefer labeling him as a great experimenter, exhibitor of talent I would like to add he was basically more entrenched into the music of the spheres and enthralled audiences at all levels.
