Collective psychology of atavistic mindsets and dilemmas.

Collective psychology of atavistic mindsets and dilemmas.

The push and the pull factors.

India has a culture of push at family level and social level. At family level even the poor people push all their limits and try to get their children educated, skilled and employed.

The pull factor from government to absorb them , encourage them, at least those who are well educated, employable and contributing tax is lacking.

So, individuals and small businesses are forced to fend for themselves.

For example, if you see economies like Malaysia is it fully only pull. The government literally, provides all facilities to Bhoomi putras whereas , in India even the most educated hardworking tax paying individuals are at the mercy of government babus and politicians just to protect their hard-earned money and to get the basic amenities. Though the conditions have been far better in the past 9 years, still a lot needs to be done.

There are or could be multiple reasons for this if we study collective psychology from all aspects.

There are those shameless colonial bossy insolence of the imperial elitists and supremacist narratives which have impacted so much that we see a mix of some atavistic mindsets and dilemmas, some inherent self-imposed attitudes of unreasonable consternations creeping in subconscious and squirming with uneasiness and more sickening attitude is that  everyone starting from those in power to ordinary employees getting excited by endorsement by those very colonial bosses.

Reality needs to take over Narratives.

The domineering tone of narratives of the West and its assertive publicity coupled with lack of spine from countries of Africa and Asia have ensured through multiple means the West could lure the luddites and pamper the parasites than allow a self-respecting country from Asia and Africa to march with its own ethnocentric pride even if it becomes in reality an economic power [ China and India], if it has immense natural resource owning nation [ African Gold mine owning nations and Middle East oil owning nations] or provides excellent skilled and intelligent work force and technological innovations generating countries [ Israel and India].

Strength needs to rule over dynamics of Power.

A day will come eventually when real ‘strength’ [ strength of natural resources, intellectual power, work force, skill sets etc.] will overcome the dubious dynamics of ‘ power’ [ which go by mostly publicity driven narratives through media, manipulations through military strategy and clandestine economic deals and grouping to impose sanctions etc.]

Self-imprisonment works in these ways without even our realizing it.

“Everything changes as you move through three stages of awareness:

first, that beliefs are the result of conditions.

second, that beliefs are the cause of conditions.

and third, that beliefs are themselves conditions.”― Eric Micha'el Leventhal.

George Bernard Shaw  wrote, " The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”

West will realise and stop its obsession to manipulate, homogenize and hegemonize through domination only when the rest of  the world starts to assert its bargaining power without any irrelevant exhibition of xenophobia.

India centric observations.

Most Indians emphasise more on survival aspect of life at the cost of the joys of living aspects of life.

Therefore, they tend to be employment seekers with immense social and parental pressure to get employed and ‘settling down in life’.

Living, growing up and settling down what do they mean?

Predominant middle class is an army of  obsessive employment seeker with better stakes at matrimonial market.

Life in its very essence means lively so it cannot settle down. Settling down is a loosely used and well accepted terminological contradiction.

Life has neither a pause button nor is it a pass it on baton.

Everything is part of life and not apart from life and therefore cannot be kept apart for a future date or an assumed future condition.

Life may be very broadly viewed as involving two major aspects survival [physical, social, material, psychological etc] aspects of life and living aspects of life [observing, enjoying, and experiencing life as it unfolds].

However, this sort of high-sounding philosophy is not meant as a sermon and need not distract anyone from pursuing planned living geared towards certain practical better survival aspects.

Growing up and growing out of certain things are natural process of evolutionary metamorphosis both biologically and psychologically.

In life many things or to be precise everything is a step or part but not a stop.

However , we are at liberty to create our own labels and definitions of settling down mostly used or abused by referring to mean material comforts alone through which we presume some social respectability is gained.

"The simplicities of natural laws arise through the complexities of the language we use for their expression."- Eugene Wigner

"Abandon the urge to simplify everything, to look for formulas and easy answers, and to begin to think multidimensionally, to glory in the mystery and paradoxes of life, not to be dismayed by the multitude of causes and consequences that are inherent in each experience -- to appreciate the fact that life is complex."- M. Scott Peck

Though no one can find fault with a notion which is predominant enough to influence and impact various aspects of life leading to multiple complexes, comparisons, competitions, capability enhancement etc.

All of these have their positive as well as negative implications of varying degrees of intensities swinging between extremes like enhanced performances, pride, privileges to sulking suicidal tendencies.

While the positive outcomes bring joy and are welcome, we need to address the negatives.

But having taken a coin can we avoid one side, or can we avoid the coin itself, no?

Our problem is mostly in either knowing the value of the coin or increasing its value, here finding the meaning and purpose of life, or trying to define something or things as meaningful or purposeful or trying to improve or increase this purpose and meaning of life.

We can avoid the unpleasant consequences of ‘settling down’ if we have a better understanding of the inevitable facts and infuse more substance into whatever we are doing rather trying to superficially substantiate our position or seeking others attention to acknowledge it.

Comprehensive analysis hoping that it would lead to better understanding inevitably makes write ups long and therefore meant for people with time, interest, and inclination to know much deeper rather than pandering to like button pressers, avid forwarders, abbreviation lovers.

I firmly believe at least while discussing certain subjects in what Dobelli says, ‘In the Art of Thinking clearly’ "With journalists, it is more difficult. Some have acquired true knowledge. Often they are veteran reporters who have specialized for years in a clearly defined area. They make a serious effort to understand the complexity of a subject and to communicate it. They tend to write long articles that highlight a variety of cases and exceptions.”

"Existence consists in the interplay of a plurality of elements whose true nature is indescribable and whose source is unknown. Combinations of these elements instantaneously flash into existence and instantaneously disappear, to be succeeded by new combinations of elements appearing in a strict causality." - Earle Ernst, The Kabuki Theatre

In the background of these simple and basic facts we need to go about unravelling more intrinsic aspects of life in much deeper ways and try to understand a little more about life and what happens while we live it [ not brushing aside anything through sermons  as dos and don’ts or as traditions and taboos].

While doing this as I always maintain that we cannot avoid:- our vulnerability or accountability to existing manufactured belief systems; social mores or morals either inculcated or enforced in whichever place/region/society we are born and brought up; the ideas/opinions churned out in various field either relevant or irrelevant but exist out there and brought within the radar of our attention and all these subjected to our limited perception and unlimited bias, inflated egos and lack of humility.

Along with these we must also realize that most of our actions and reactions are based on our inherent/innate/natural attributes, the inevitable context/situation/circumstance in which we are in and our attitude [s] towards everything and everyone based on these or despite these.

It is also a fact that based on these we always end up acting or reacting with actions, words, thoughts etc according to what we want, what we can and what we are destined to do.

So, there is a perennial duel going on between inner forces/weakness and external influences and impacts.

Life’s journey is a constant process of learning and adjusting to these and carrying on with various balancing acts, involving lot of choices and decisions, which have a generous spread of synonyms to justify like inevitable confirmations, flexibilities, hypocrisies, diplomacies, social accommodation, disciplined life, socio-cultural compatibility etc.

All fields of human knowledge systems and actions help us with accumulated knowledge of processes to facilitate us in our choices and decisions be it religion, politics, science, or socio-cultural frames of functioning.

We must be able to steer clear of all unwanted distraction when we exercise our choice or take decisions to ensure that they give pleasure to or improve us physically, psychologically, or spiritually without harming, or sometimes with the least possible harm to, society and environment and all life forms. In short ensure intrinsic value additions to all or some of the facets of life mentioned above.

"To make progress in understanding all this, we probably need to begin with simplified (oversimplified?) models and ignore the critics' tirade that the real world is more complex. The real world is always more complex, which has the advantage that we shan't run out of work."- John Ball, 1984, Memes as Replicators, Ethology and Sociobiology, Vol. 5

Like with everything else this concept of ‘settling down’ carries different crazy connotations, exerts various pressures, and extracts varying degrees of sacrifice and or postponement of life’s joys and experiences depending on the economic conditions and socio-cultural pressures etc.

In certain societies the competitions, comparisons and pressures are so enormous on everyone that it leads to various manifestations of stress, frustrations, fights, and end ups depriving life of its happiness, peace, joy etc.

I am tempted to imitate an excellent and famous verse by Rabindranath Tagore

“Where The Mind Is Without Fear :
Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake”. –by Rabindranath Tagore

My imitated version of verse titled

‘Living life and setting down in life’

Where life is lived and leads us out of these compulsions:

Where life is made to pass through motions of /phases of existence

So that it can settle down somehow, somewhere in some way.

Where life’s activities must confirm existing approved labels.

Where life is deprived of any unbiased free observations.

Where life’s relationships are confined by narrow expectations of reciprocation.

Where life is subjected to scrutiny with ulterior motives and hidden agendas.

Where life’s interactions happen with lurking suspicions and simmering discontent.

Where life’s inter relatedness goes unnoticed because of narrow identity cages.

Let us live a life observing, experiencing, and enjoying as it unfolds continuously flowing like a gentle river without settling down.

Let us enjoy the playful innocence of childhood.

Let us enjoy the carefree abandon of youth.

Let us learn the pleasures, privileges, and responsibility of blossoming adulthood.

Let us enjoy romance and relate with love.

Let us experience the inter relatedness of everything and everyone.

Let nature/fate decide to settle down life by stopping oxygen supply.

Energy is not a crisis but an axis of economic power

For us energy is not a crisis but an axis of economic power.

Dynamics of  geopolitical power is powered by the four A class pillars of energy.

Accessibility,

Availability

Affordability and

AI enables all these.

Our tools and technical knowhow can enable all these with our triple AAA

Accuracy,

Affordable rates and

Alacrity in delivery.

Nuances are vital in every aspect of life.

Nuances are vital in every aspect of life.

Though they are conveyed more effectively in words one must understand the concepts, thoughts, ideas, ideologies, doctrines, philosophy, opinions, actions and so on that the words convey.

Often, the human mind misses them in its propensity to over-generalize varieties, oversimplify the complex and over complicate the simple aspects.

There are varying degrees and shades of differences in the wide spectrum of attitudes and behaviour ranging from  humility, false modesty, hypocritical posturing, subservient attitudes. I have healthy contempt for all sorts of hypocrisies unless they are inevitable compromises and adjustments warranted for diplomatic niceties.

I think Indians must learn to not to mix irrelevant things.

At times it is difficult to draw the lines of being idealistic and being practical.

What is idealism in one era becomes practical in another.

Read this book 'An idealist  View of Life' by our former President Dr. S. Radhakrishnan who was at ease in the theory of both eastern and western philosophical systems.

Practical and idealistic are context specific, so without real context, only generalization will govern.

Those holding any top position of importance in government like MPs, Ministers, more so PM or PRESIDENT must, in public, confine themselves,  to mere publicity posturing or participation as symbolic gestures but must not overdo, irrespective of whatever be their personal identity or private affinity.

These become more important in pluralistic societies with excessive media freedom [now added to these we have a huge military of memes generators].

It is not a question of mere playing on words or verbalization but sometimes harsh reality and at times it is perceptions that get in to expose the differences.

Practicality consists in seeing through the differences, not to admire or to avoid but at least to acknowledge and to accept.

For example, STANDARDIZATION is very important in certain spheres like size of plug point or size of sim cards; in certain areas UNIFORMITY is a necessity to measure and make comparative analysis to determine relative merits and demerits like syllabus in education system.

However, forced HOMOGENIZATION to mutilate variety is unwelcome like compelling everyone to lead only a certain way of life.

Similarly, even natural beauty like a vast mountainous region or travelling in big rivers like Amazon can get boring after sometimes due to sheer MONOTONY.

Either unintentionally or intentionally all the four above i.e., Standards, Uniformity, Homogeneity, Monotony all indicate some sort of sameness or similarity.

However, their importance, impact, and our interest in them are obvious but in the case of homogenization it is subtly injected and in the case of MONOTONY it is our mental reaction or attitude.

Evaluation of any profession must be based on matters intrinsic to the domain and relevant to context.

No big terms of idealism or practical, both can be used relatively.

What is possible or Practical for someone at some place may be idealistic for others.

It is like trends and taboos.

Story writing involves

Writing any good story is a religious activity, even those that are anti-religious.

The differences between good stories and great stories, as well as good writings and great writings, are many; again, that is religious.

The greatness of Mahabharata and Ramayana is religious, not because of the main characters.

The meaning of the word "religion" in the above three sentences is all about links, connections, and relationships.

For example, if you take the Ramayana, there will be some link or links, even remotely, of every character, action, event, and happening to the whole story in some way.

Etymologically, the word "religion" is derived from the two latin words “re” and “ligare” which means “to reconnect” 'Ligare' incidentally is the root for words like link, liaison etc.

Religion is meant to connect the individual soul with the universal soul, individual life as part of the complete life of the cosmos.

But then, how is it possible when the idea or seed of a story emanates out of some strong emotion, imagination, impact, or creative idea and is pursued with passion? Are these paradoxes or different facets of life?

Passion and emotion are two aspects of feelings that gush forth in massive flow imbued with intensity, impulse, imagination, and creative and romantic instincts, and therefore there are bound to be aggressions, roughness, and turbulences.

So, how can one ensure polishing rough edges?

How can one chisel and carve logical links as it can be done in something that is solid but not something that is fluid and flowing?

Or do the links emerge automatically through some inherent attributes creating patterns leading to synergetic wholeness?

There could be multiple factors on display, as life is inherently a dynamic, multi-faceted splendor with various dimensions, and every dimension proliferates through its interactions with other dimensions dynamically, and all of these happen in the churn that happens in the cauldron of the environment.

However, this whole display of ‘drama of life’ unfolds in the specific context of time and space—the two predominant factors through which human perception operates.

When this drama of life is absorbed with total intensity and intense totality, then a story is created with a philosophical frame of mind with openness to seek and to search for meaning and purpose, and then the links do emerge, revealing the reasons starting from simple cause and effect to a multitude of other reasons.

Whereas, if the story is manufactured to push an ideology or doctrine or agenda, then one must come up with contrived justifications to pull towards the ideology in the place of naturally evolving rational links.

Now herein comes the necessity to know the difference between philosophy and ideology.

Once , these factors are understood with clarity, then next important step comes into play the deft handling of the tools of the medium paying  all possible attention to subtle nuances effectively to create  aesthetic appeal and  impact.

If it is  writing, then the appropriate use of words and handling the language.

If film, the use of visual impacts.

If music, then the structure of sounds etc.

So, a comprehensive command and control over the medium is equally important.

Overall, the tone and tenor must be around a philosophical outlook-based perception or reaction with contextual relevance, historical and cultural perspective with authenticity in all aspects if it is a serious novel or non- fiction or even a semi-fiction.

If it is fiction, then one is at liberty to throw all caution to the winds and freely narrate the story for example a modern-day Seetha’s Swayamvaram will be choosing a person based on his salary, wealth, position, grooming  etc in tune with the trend.

10 concepts that explain the modern world

10 concepts that explain the modern world

1. Parkinson’s Law: Companies become bigger and worse over time. Clerks manufacture work for each other as overall capacity dips. When British Navy ships went down from 68 to 20, officials increased by 78%.

2. Chesterton Fence: If you don’t know what an old custom does, don’t touch it. It may be holding back problems you’re completely unaware of. You’ve not seen the wolves yet because of the very fence you’re about to demolish.

3. The Medici Effect: Sculptors, painters, and architects converged in Florence as the Medicis were funding the artists. Their proximity led to a fertile dialogue which, in turn, led to the Renaissance. The internet will amplify this cross-pollination of ideas.

4. The Centipede's Dilemma: Ask a centipede which one of its hundred legs moves the fastest and it forgets how to move. Reflecting on what we normally do without thought ironically worsens performance. A culture of endless self-reflection, therapy, and navel gazing is eroding important life skills.

5. Tyranny of small decisions: Individuals make small decisions to maximize convenience but this leads to massive social failure. We nod along to contagious ideas like “gender is fluid” because resisting them is too much work - till kids start getting transgender surgery. The slippery slope is not a fallacy but a fundamental reality.

6. The Zebra Effect explains why people don’t want to stand out. Zebras are hard to individually study as it's nearly impossible to track one of them for long (lost in the striped chaos). So scientists once put a big red dot on one zebra so he could be tracked & studied. Lions zeroed in on him and hunted him with ease. Getting lost among others is a survival mechanism. Hence the human desire to conform.

7. Why the ruler can’t rule: The executive head can’t implement his ideas on ground because the bureaucrats are closer to it, and have an agenda of their own. The Tzar of Russia had to deal with the Deep State too. Nicholas II: “I never ruled Russia. 10,000 clerks ruled Russia.”

8. Gall's law: A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked. Only fools and modern technocrats try to create complex systems from scratch.

9. Minimal Self Hypothesis: Narcissism is a “strategic retreat” into the safety of one’s own self. When the future looks random, inexplicable, and informationally overwhelming, people enter survival mode. The self becomes “minimal” to reduce its surface area to pain. People today are giving up on commitment of all sorts to conserve energy for vague and upcoming disasters.

10. Tetris Syndrome: The world will eventually start looking like Tetris blocks if you play the game too much. What we do most often becomes the metaphor through which we look at the world. Takeaway: Most people today are addicted to their 2D phones - and this will hurt the general aptitude for dealing with the 3D world.

International Day of Philosophy

"In whatever ways we are made—by God, the forces of nature, or the conventions of society—there remain frayed strands in the fabric of human existence where self-making adds to the process".

This forms the basis of the philosophical thoughts of Jules Lequier, the much unknown but important philosopher of 19 century.

'Observation of human nature' without any bias,  search for meanings and seek honestly to know, to understand and to learn about the details of things, events, persons observed may be defined as one of the important processes of philosophy. Then, based on the perception that emanates out of these  philosophical approaches one may try to look for synergies or new dimensions and new  dynamics of or notice nuances of life hitherto unnoticed and try to define or delineate or deal with life and its manifestations.

Quoting either the scriptures or literary pieces are useful tools but they too like slogans can block real curiosity, unbiased observation ( observation is influenced by frames of references and biases), lesser scope to accept or to understand issues, leave alone offering remedies.

So, most observers are a bundle of biases.

' Human nature' - is it biological nature or social behaviour?

The term nature itself, is loosely used figuratively.

Philosophy doesn't make tall claims. Scientists and science too do not make tall claims or finality of anything.

The problem is people who confuse ideology for philosophy and religious scriptural observations to be ultimate truths and weave their world of reality and use that as a yardstick for wisdom.

Worse, still spill all over terminologies that have, somehow, got an aura around them.
Often, these appropriators of 'philosophical and religious wisdom' are prone to view everything in binaries like evil and good, good and bad, right and wrong etc.

This has prevented humanity from both observing and/or appreciating and accepting the multitude of things that may and perhaps really do exist between, beyond and besides these binaries.

Philosophy, as a subject , by itself is supposed to be one of the excellent subjects that enables  societies to observe , to analyse and to understand things beyond the clutches of religions, traditions and social pressures inflicted by them.

All great philosophers and top scientists without hypocrisies have admitted the limitations of their stream of study.

DIFFERENCES, VARIETY and ONENESS.

We live in a world where it's easy to forget that our very first duty is not to a political or religious concept, or to a flag, but to each other…

That is the only philosophy in which I believe at present.

I keep repeating the above slide very often, ad nauseum.

Though it is wrong to oversimplify everything, unfortunately, to convey certain things to the present generation whose attention span and patience have shrunk too much, I use these types of slides.

Tamil and Sanskrit literature has the most ancient SMS and TWITTER.

As the great saint poet of Tamil Avaiyar conveyed great philosophy through SMS and another  saint poet Tiruvalluvar made a whole book of Twitters. Sanskrit slokas are linguistically too brief and philosophically very broad.

So, this is nothing new and the obvious facts exist in the vast ocean of literature, history and philosophy.

It is there for every discerning mind and willing heart these facts that are well explained, in easily understandable languages, authentic , proven, well documented through evidences from the most fundamental, inevitable and basic biological facts to abstract spiritual sciences indicating both variety and underlying ONENESS.

These are not utopia, but reality i.e., DIFFERENCES, VARIETY and ONENESS.

We cannot defy or deny anyone of the above three fundamental facts but learn how to handle them sanely.

Many of the sane political, theological, religious texts, arts and cultures, traditions and all sciences have also tried their best to bring to light these facts and see the synergy amid the chaos and differences.

We need to learn to relate with everything and everyone without any preconceived notions but with a heart to accept.

"Life is after all not mere chronology of existence but a meaningful topology of relationships.

We cannot experience life based on past templates nor future projections but can experience life as a live activity at present in the present situation or context.

However, we can imbue our attitude in dealing with any context with some time- tested humane values like compassion, love, forgiveness, humility, sharing and caring.

These will ensure that even during the spur of the movement, spontaneous or short tempered reactions, the hurt or negative impact will be less or at least less violent.

Along with these attitudes we must also ensure that every word and deed are- out of concern - calculated, measured, nuanced and calibrated to the context but taking into consideration all the sensitivities and sensibilities of all involved.

Therefore, words and deeds have to be also   nice and diplomatically delivered.

Most importantly egocentric psychological interpretation of actions must be avoided because it will see adjustments or cooperation as compromise and so on.

Every relationship is a many faceted splendor and all the facets together contribute to the splendor, whether it is with persons, books, movies, any art, music, culture, tradition, gadgets, environment, vehicles or anything".

I wrote this as part of a debate which I later on posted in my blog
